Key Highlights

  • In May 2022, Sweden’s central payment system RIX introduced a new instant payment service called RIX-INST, offering real-time payment settlement in Swedish krona between banks. Operating 24 hours a day, seven days a week, 365 days a year, RIX-INST settles payments using two models: the standard Settlement Model and the Single Instructing Party Settlement Model. With the latter model, there is no need for the payee to authorize the payment. Transactions are carried out immediately once the transaction is approved by RIX-INST. As of February 2025, a total of 45 banks and financial institutions participate in RIX-INST.
  • As per the analyst’s Payment Cards Analytics, total card fraud value fell from SEK208.7 million ($19.7 million) in 2020 to an estimated SEK167.1 million ($15.8 million) in 2024e at a negative CAGR of 5.4%. To drive this value down further, the central bank and banking and payment industry stakeholders are intensifying efforts to bolster financial literacy and prioritize fraud prevention. This is being achieved through consumer education and heightened anti-fraud awareness initiatives. For instance, the Swedish Bankers’ Association launched the Svarlurad campaign, which is designed to boost awareness of fraud techniques as well as methods of consumer protection
  • Sweden boasts a mature payment infrastructure with robust POS terminal penetration. The number of POS terminals rose from 236,082 in 2020 to 244,129 in 2024e. POS terminals are forecast to record a CAGR of 3.9% over 2025-29, rising to 298,481 in 2029. This will be driven by increased adoption of contactless payments. In addition to traditional POS terminals, companies offer mobile POS solutions targeting SMEs. In October 2024, Apple launched Tap to Pay on iPhone, enabling businesses to accept in-person contactless payments via compatible iPhones. Nets introduced the Tap to Pay on iPhone feature for its merchants in Sweden via Nets’ SoftPOS solution.
