Key Highlights
- International cards used for mobile payments through mobile wallets, such as Apple Pay and Google Pay, are shaping developments in the card payments market. From early 2025, Nets required that any card issuer/bank allowing a co-badged Dankort card to be added to a wallet must also make the Dankort functionality available in that same wallet. In practice, if a bank issues a Visa/Dankort card and enables the Visa part for wallet use, it must also enable the Dankort part in the wallet. All Danish banks currently comply with this requirement for Apple Pay. However, the central bank reports that, as of May 2026, banks had not yet started the process of meeting Nets’ requirement for Google Pay.
- In November 2025, Vipps MobilePay launched a Tap-to-Pay solution across the Nordic region, including Denmark, which enables users to make contactless payments via the MobilePay app. The solution allows consumers to make payments at merchants that accept Visa and Mastercard, without requiring a physical card, and allows users to complete transactions through a simple double-click on their device.
- In June 2025, Denmark passed a law mandating payment system operators to allow payment service providers to access their systems on fair, objective, and reasonable terms. As a result, Nets must allow other acquirers to process Dankort payments. At the same time, the political parties behind the Dankort agreement agreed on a plan to strengthen Dankort by issuing many more cards and adding new features, such as balance monitoring and a business card. The deal also allows funding to cover Nets’ costs for building these upgrades and for opening Dankort to new acquirers. The central bank discussed the impact with Nets during 2025 and will continue talks in 2026, focusing on whether Nets meets required standards and manages new risks that come from having other acquirers handle Dankort transactions.
