This study looks at how college students are using fixed workstations and laptops in the academic library. It presents detailed data on who uses library provided fixed workstations and who brings their own laptop to the library. It also gives detailed demographic data on the borrowing of laptops from library technology lending programs.
The study helps library planners to answer questions such as: what do students use library workstations for? What are their needs for the future? How important to them are library provided fixed workstations? How easy is it for them to find a workstation equipped for their purposes when needed? What might they prefer in place of fixed workstations in the academic library? How does fixed workstation use and laptop use in the library compare? How much should a library invest in fixed workstations vs laptop lending programs and other alternatives?
Just a few of this report’s many findings are that:
- Engineering/CS and Biology/Pre-Med students use workstations the most, English, Philosophy, and Communications the least.
- 7.69% of students use library fixed workstations for multimedia editing.
- Students from rural areas, those majoring in Psychology or English, or from high-income families ($250k+) are the least likely to use library laptop borrowing programs
- 1.8% of students use a fixed library workstation every day
