A diode, also known as a rectifier, is a semiconductor device which enables the smooth flow of current in a particular direction while restricting its flow in the opposite direction. They can also be used to transform alternating current into intermittent direct current. Diodes are used in various sectors for several purposes, such as surge protection, voltage regulation, and power conversion, among others.
A diode is made by joining two types of semiconductor materials- P-type and N-type. The P-type is rich in positive charge carriers (holes), and the N-type is rich in negative charge carriers (electrons). The junction where these two types meet is called the PN junction.
When the P-type side (anode) is connected to the positive terminal of a battery and the N-type side (cathode) to the negative terminal, the diode is said to be forward-biased. In this state, the diode allows the flow of electric current. If the connections are reversed, the diode is reverse-biased. In this state, it blocks current flow, except for a very tiny leakage current.
Key Trends in the Market
Growing popularity of automotive diodes
The increasing application of automotive-grade diodes is driving the diode market growth. In an automobile, diodes perform crucial automotive functions such as reverse battery protection, motor control, and LED lighting, among others. In line with this, the increasing sale of passenger and commercial vehicles is propelling the incorporation of diodes, thereby adding to the growth of the market. As the automotive sector shifts towards electric vehicles (EVs) and hybrid electric vehicles (HEVs), the demand for efficient power management solutions increases. Diodes, being crucial in power conversion and management, are extensively used in these vehicles. They are deployed in battery charging systems, power converters, and various electronic control units (ECUs).
In hybrid and electric vehicles, regenerative braking systems convert kinetic energy into electrical energy during braking. Diodes are used in these systems to manage and direct the flow of this regenerated energy, ensuring efficient charging of the vehicle's battery. The global expansion of the automotive sector, particularly in emerging economies, is another factor driving the demand for automotive-grade diodes.
Rapid technological developments in the electrical and electronic sector
Growing innovations in the electrical and electronics sector support the development of handheld and portable consumer electronics, such as advanced smartwatches and fitness bands, wall clocks, and high-performance computers, among others, which is propelling the diode market demand. Electronics with smaller sizes have lower power consumption which are supported by custom diodes. As electronic devices become smaller and more powerful, there is an increasing need for compact yet efficient components. Diodes are being developed to meet these miniaturisation trends, leading to innovations in diode technology that offer smaller sizes without compromising on performance.
The growing focus on renewable energy sources like solar and wind power has escalated the demand for diodes. They are crucial in solar panels and wind turbines for functions like blocking reverse currents and efficient power conversion. The expansion of renewable energy infrastructure is a significant driver for the market. The development of advanced power electronic devices, which are essential for managing power in a wide range of electronic applications, is another driver.
Increasing usage of silicon carbide (SiC) diodes due to their characteristics like superior stability
One of the crucial diode market trends is the burgeoning popularity of silicon carbide (SiC) diodes, due to their superior stability for reverse leakage at higher power densities. The surge in production of SiC diodes by medium and large-scale businesses, to improve battery capacity to spearhead production processes, are expected to be crucial trends in the market.Silicon carbide diode can operate at much higher temperatures than silicon. This is a crucial advantage in applications where devices are subjected to high thermal stress, reducing the need for additional cooling systems. SiC diodes can switch on and off much faster than silicon diodes. This allows for higher frequency operation in power electronic devices, beneficial for applications such as electric vehicle chargers, solar inverters, and high-frequency power supplies.
SiC diodes contribute to improved power density in electronic devices, enabling the design of compact systems with high power output. Furthermore, the efficiency of SiC diodes translates to lower energy consumption, which is beneficial both in terms of operational costs and environmental impact, particularly in large-scale industrial applications.
