The global space-based solar power (SBSP) market was valued at USD 380.0 million in 2025. The market is estimated at USD 460.0 million in 2026 and is projected to reach USD 4.83 billion by 2036, growing at a CAGR of 26.5% over the 2026-2036 forecast period. The report reviews architectures, technologies, demonstration missions, national programs, costs, regulation, funding, patents, and competition.

The market includes the systems, technologies, and services that gather sunlight in orbit and send the energy wirelessly to receivers on Earth, on other spacecraft, or on the Moon and other bodies. It covers the space segment (solar arrays or reflectors, power conversion, microwave phased arrays or lasers, structures, and spacecraft buses), the ground segment (rectennas, laser photovoltaic receivers, and grid integration and storage), launch and in-space assembly, and operations and power delivery services. Because commercial power sales will remain negligible until the 2030s, market value is measured as spending on programs, demonstrations, hardware, launch, and early services.

The concept dates back to Peter Glaser's 1968 proposal, but launch costs kept it on paper for decades. Recent missions have changed that, as Caltech's 2023 demonstrator sent power across space and its MAPLE experiment picked up beamed energy on the ground. Cost is still the central question. According to NASA's Office of Technology, Policy, and Strategy, two 2-gigawatt reference designs analyzed in January 2024 would deliver electricity at USD 0.61 and USD 1.59 per kilowatt-hour, against USD 0.02 to 0.05 for terrestrial renewables, although the same study found that combined advances in launch, cell efficiency, servicing, and lifetime could bring costs down to USD 0.03 to 0.08 per kilowatt-hour.

Market Dynamics

Interest is driven first by energy security and the appeal of clean power that is available almost around the clock, since a collector in geostationary orbit is barely affected by night, weather, or season. This matters most for import-dependent countries such as Japan, and it underpins programs such as ESA's SOLARIS, launched in November 2022. Reusable rockets and rideshare missions are cutting launch costs, which NASA reported, together with manufacturing, make up more than 90% of lifecycle cost. Defense users want power for forward bases that now rely on costly and exposed fuel convoys, and Aetherflux won Pentagon operational energy funding in fiscal 2025. Successful in-orbit demonstrations are lowering technical risk, and AI data centers are emerging as offtakers for firm clean power, with the International Energy Agency (IEA) projecting data center electricity use to rise from about 415 terawatt-hours in 2024 to about 945 terawatt-hours in 2030.

High electricity cost compared with ground-based renewables is the main restraint, and NASA's analysis put baseline SBSP at roughly 12 to 80 times their cost. Utility-scale systems would need 5.9 million to 10 million kilograms in orbit, according to NASA, along with robotic assembly and servicing that do not yet exist at scale. Energy is lost at every conversion step, and low-orbit trials face short ground passes, with Japan's OHISAMA satellite able to send about 1 kilowatt for just minutes at a time. No licensing framework yet exists for commercial power beaming, so spectrum, beam safety, and airspace rules remain open. Further challenges include public concern about power beams, orbital debris and tighter disposal rules, falling prices for terrestrial solar, wind, and storage, and the long, capital-intensive path from kilowatt trials to gigawatt stations.

The nearest commercial openings are defense and remote power services, where beamed energy can command prices far above grid power, and in-space power beaming between satellites or for lunar operations during the 14-day lunar night. Longer term, offtake deals with data centers and utilities are taking shape, including a reported capacity reservation of up to 1 gigawatt between Overview Energy and Meta and Space Solar's 30-megawatt pilot plan with Reykjavik Energy. Key trends include the move to modular low-orbit constellations and laser transmission, state-backed programs in China and Japan, early capacity reservations used as a financing tool, and reusable heavy-lift launch from SpaceX, Blue Origin, and Chinese providers.

Segment Analysis

The report analyzes the market by component, power transmission technology, orbit, development stage, application, end user, and geography, helping stakeholders identify where spending is concentrated today and where commercial value will emerge.

By component, the report covers the space and ground segments, launch & in-space assembly services, and operations & services. The space segment is expected to hold the largest share in 2026, as current budgets go mainly to demonstration spacecraft, such as the Aetherflux and OHISAMA satellites, and their solar arrays, transmitters, and deployable structures. Launch & in-space assembly services are projected to grow at the highest CAGR during the forecast period, because the move to pilot systems requires far more mass in orbit and robotic assembly, and NASA's analysis shows launch and manufacturing dominate lifecycle cost.

Of the three power transmission technologies analyzed, namely microwave, laser, and reflected sunlight, microwave transmission is expected to hold the largest share in 2026, since government programs have relied on it, including OHISAMA's use of the 2.45 GHz and 5.8 GHz bands, Caltech's MAPLE experiment, China's program, and the system studies under SOLARIS. The laser segment is projected to record the highest CAGR, supported by modular low-orbit designs that need much smaller receivers, such as Aetherflux's planned infrared demonstration with a 10-meter spot size. Reflected sunlight from orbital mirrors, pursued by companies such as Reflect Orbital, is a distinct approach for extending daylight at ground solar sites.

The orbit analysis spans low, medium, and geostationary orbits (LEO, MEO, and GEO). LEO is expected to hold the largest share in 2026, as near-term demonstrations, including OHISAMA at about 400 kilometers and Aetherflux's 2026 mission, use low-cost rideshare launches and can be tested quickly. GEO is projected to grow at the highest CAGR, as pilot and utility-scale concepts need the near-continuous sunlight of that orbit, as seen in China's kilometer-scale plans and NASA's 2-gigawatt reference designs.

Based on development stage, the market is segmented into research & feasibility studies, in-orbit demonstration, pilot systems, and commercial operations. Spending today is concentrated in studies and demonstration missions funded by agencies and investors, such as SOLARIS, OHISAMA, and Aetherflux's first mission. Over the forecast period, value is expected to move toward pilot systems, such as the 30-megawatt plant targeted for 2030 by Space Solar and Reykjavik Energy, with commercial operations starting from a very small base as the first offtake agreements begin delivery around 2030.

By application, the study covers defense & remote operations, utility & data center power, disaster relief & remote communities, and in-space power beaming, including satellite-to-satellite and lunar and planetary surface power. Defense & remote operations are expected to account for the largest share in 2026, supported by Department of Defense funding for Aetherflux, Navy research going back to the 2020 PRAM test aboard the X-37B, and the high value of power for remote forces. Utility & data center power is projected to grow at the highest CAGR, as data center operators seek firm clean energy and reservation agreements target delivery from 2030.

The end user analysis includes government & space agencies, defense organizations, utilities & energy companies, and commercial & industrial users. Government & space agencies are expected to hold the largest share in 2026, reflecting the central role of OHISAMA, SOLARIS, China's program, and NASA's study work in funding the field. Utilities & energy companies are projected to register the highest CAGR, as pilot projects such as Space Solar's partnership with Reykjavik Energy move toward delivery and power buyers reserve future capacity.

Regional Analysis

The report covers North America, Europe, Asia-Pacific, Latin America, and the Middle East & Africa, analyzing 18 countries, the Nordic countries including Iceland, and four rest-of-region groups.

North America is expected to remain the largest regional market in 2026, as the U.S. hosts most SBSP startups, defense research, and demonstration activity. Aetherflux is preparing its 2026 mission, Caltech's demonstrator flew in 2023 with philanthropic backing, and NASA published its cost and emissions study in January 2024. A cluster of U.S. startups, from Overview Energy and Virtus Solis to Star Catcher, Reach Power, and Reflect Orbital, adds depth, as does SpaceX's launch capacity. Europe also holds a significant share, supported by SOLARIS, a pre-Phase A system study completed by Thales Alenia Space in December 2023, Airbus's 2022 ground test of wireless power transmission, and the U.K.'s Space Solar.

Asia-Pacific is projected to grow at the highest CAGR during the forecast period on the strength of national programs in China and Japan. China built a 75-meter ground verification facility at Xidian University in 2022 and has outlined a kilometer-wide power station in geostationary orbit, backed by its growing heavy-lift launch program. Japan has studied space solar power for decades through JAXA, Mitsubishi Electric, and Mitsubishi Heavy Industries and is preparing OHISAMA to beam power to receivers near Suwa, and South Korea is showing rising interest. The Middle East & Africa and Latin America are expected to grow from small bases, with Gulf space programs and Israel's laser and power electronics capabilities in the former and Brazil's near-equatorial Alcântara launch center and remote mining sites in Chile in the latter.
