Space Based Solar Power (SBSP) involves the collection of solar energy in outer space and its transmission to Earth via satellite. This concept eliminates many of the inefficiencies and intermittencies imposed by Earth's atmosphere and the day-night cycle. Satellite communications play a crucial role in SBSP. Dedicated satellites equipped with solar panels capture sunlight and convert it into energy, usually in the form of microwaves or laser beams. This energy is then wirelessly transmitted to ground-based receivers. The satellites thus function both as power generation hubs and communication relays, managing and coordinating the energy transfer to receivers that convert the beamed energy into electrical power for the grid. In the context of satellite communications, SBSP requires a highly sophisticated infrastructure for both energy conversion and precise transmission to ensure that the transmitted energy reaches its intended destination safely and efficiently. This dual-use technology involves advancements in telecommunication satellites as well, particularly in terms of managing the vast amounts of data associated with energy capture and transmission processes. Companies involved in the Space Based Solar Power market include Solaren, which aspires to provide SBSP solutions; SpaceX, which constructs launch vehicles that may facilitate SBSP satellite deployment; and the Northrop Grumman Corporation, which researches and develops relevant technologies. Mitsubishi Electric is another contributor, engaged in the development of SBSP systems, while the European aerospace company Airbus Defense and Space explores the potential for SBSP initiatives in conjunction with government and industry partners.
