Time to turn healthy
Following international trends, consumer preferences in India shifted towards healthier drinks during the review period. Carbonates began to decline, as consumers switched to fruit/vegetable juice and bottled water. The lingering effects of the discovery of pesticides in carbonates in 2003 took its toll while consumers began to look for healthier alternatives. Carbonates manufacturers Coca-Cola India Pvt Ltd and PepsiCo India Holdings Pvt Ltd also raised carbonates prices, as preserving profits took a priority over volume growth. Furthermore an increase in schools and colleges’ awareness about the alleged harmful effects of carbonates was caused by the pesticides controversy and this is also encouraging people to switch to healthier alternatives.
