Propylene oxide is an organic, colorless, and volatile liquid. It is highly reactive and is used in the manufacture of propylene glycol and polyols. Also, it is an essential derivative of propylene and is widely used as a chemical intermediate in the production of elastomers, adhesives, flexible and rigid foams, coatings, and injection moldings.
Propylene oxide also finds application in the dyeing industry, where it is used to produce non-ionic tensides and used for the separation of crude oil emulsions. It is primarily manufactured through propylene chlorohydrin process and propylene oxidation process using peroxides.
