Sorbitol is a sugar alcohol that is mostly used as a type of sweetener. It is used as a flavoring agent and sugar substitute. Though sorbitol is found naturally in many fruits such as apples and pears, it is mainly produced using corn syrup that is used for industrial purposes. Sorbitol is widely used as a replacement for sucrose in sugar-free foods. Other uses of sorbitol include personal care products such as toothpaste and cosmetic. Moreover, it is commonly used in the production of sugar-free products as it adds bulk and stiffness in the absence of sugar. It also extends the life of specific products and helps regulate moisture content. It has a low glycemic index, which makes it a suitable product for a diabetic diet.
For the production of sorbitol, the primary raw materials are cleaned, and the starch is extracted in a wet milling process and purified and concentrated. The concentrated starch is liquefied using acid. The hydrolysate is the resulting intermediate of this conversion. Furthermore, the purified fully saccharified starch solution is concentrated, and the solution is hydrogenated in the presence of a catalyst. The hydrogenated solution is decanted and subsequently subjected to carbon treatment and ion exchange. The purified solution is then evaporated to 70% dry matter, which is the most common usual concentration of liquid sorbitol.
