Digital TV penetration reached 68.9% (118.26 million) of TV households by end-2015, and is expected to climb to 77.2% (136.34 million) by end-2016. Massive uptake is forecast, with 98.0% penetration (198.71 million) expected by 2021.

Digital cable TV is responsible for much of this growth as the government imposed conversion targets spread through the country. Half (103.2 million) of TV households will subscribe to digital cable by 2021, up from 3.5% (5.0 million) in 2010.

However, analog cable penetration will fall in a mirror fashion (losing 84 million subscribers between 2010 and 2021). Not all analog cable homes will convert to digital cable as the satellite TV operators have already enticed many over in the cities where analog cable switch-off has taken place. IPTV and triple-play will become more of a competitive threat.
