All Electric Satellites (AES) represent a segment of the satellite communications industry that focuses on spacecrafts which rely exclusively on electric propulsion systems for orbit raising and on-station maneuvers. Unlike traditional satellites that use chemical propulsion, AES leverage advanced electric propulsion technologies, such as ion thrusters or Hall effect thrusters, which provide a more efficient use of propellant and enable a reduction in satellite mass. This efficiency allows for either smaller launch vehicles or more payload mass for communications equipment. The adoption of electric propulsion systems has also been spurred by the increasing demand for high-throughput communications services, leading to new satellite designs with complex payloads requiring sustained on-orbit maneuverability.
Within satellite communications, AES offer extended operational lifetimes and lower launch costs, which are attractive to both commercial and government operators for applications like broadband internet, broadcasting, and secure communications. This technological shift is transforming the industry’s manufacturing and deployment strategies, as satellites become lighter and more versatile, enhancing coverage and service capabilities.
Several companies are active players in the all electric satellite market. Key industry players that design, manufacture, and operate AES include Boeing, Lockheed Martin, Airbus Defence and Space, Northrop Grumman, and Thales Alenia Space. Moreover, companies like SpaceX and Blue Origin provide launch services that complement the capabilities of AES by offering flexible and cost-effective access to space. Show Less Read more
