Alvimopan is a gastrointestinal drug used to treat postoperative ileus (POI) and reduce the duration of postoperative bowel recovery. It is a peripherally-acting mu-opioid receptor antagonist that works by blocking the effects of opioids on the gastrointestinal tract. Alvimopan is administered orally and is available in capsule form. It is indicated for use in adults who have undergone bowel resection surgery and are at risk for POI. Alvimopan is marketed by Cosmo Pharmaceuticals, a specialty pharmaceutical company based in Ireland.
