Cayston is an antibiotic used to treat chronic lung infections caused by the bacteria Pseudomonas aeruginosa in people with cystic fibrosis (CF). It is a combination of the active ingredient aztreonam and the inactive ingredient liposomal ciprofloxacin. Cayston works by killing the bacteria that cause the infection. It is administered as an inhalation solution and is available in a single-use vial. Cayston is a relatively new antibiotic on the market, having been approved by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) in 2010. It is the first and only inhaled antibiotic approved for the treatment of CF lung infections. It is also the only inhaled antibiotic approved for use in combination with other CF treatments. Cayston is marketed by Gilead Sciences, Inc. and is available in the United States, Canada, and Europe.
