Fluorine-18 (F-18) is a radioactive isotope used in Nuclear Medicine and Radiopharmacy. It is produced in a cyclotron and is used in positron emission tomography (PET) imaging. F-18 is used to diagnose and monitor a variety of diseases, including cancer, heart disease, and neurological disorders. It is also used to measure the effectiveness of treatments. F-18 has a short half-life of 110 minutes, so it must be produced and used quickly.
F-18 is used in a variety of radiopharmaceuticals, including Fluorodeoxyglucose (FDG), which is used to detect cancer. Other radiopharmaceuticals include Sodium Fluoride (NaF), which is used to detect bone metastases, and Fluoromisonidazole (FMISO), which is used to detect hypoxia.
