The Generation, Transmission and Distribution (GTD) market is an integral part of the electricity industry. It is responsible for the production, transmission and distribution of electricity to end-users. Generation is the process of producing electricity from sources such as coal, natural gas, nuclear, hydro, wind and solar. Transmission is the process of transporting electricity from the generation source to the distribution network. Distribution is the process of delivering electricity to end-users.
GTD is a highly regulated industry, with governments and regulatory bodies setting standards and policies to ensure the safe and reliable delivery of electricity. GTD companies must also comply with environmental regulations to reduce their impact on the environment.
GTD companies include utilities, independent power producers, transmission companies, distribution companies and energy retailers. Examples of utilities include Duke Energy, Southern Company and Dominion Energy. Examples of independent power producers include AES Corporation, NRG Energy and Calpine Corporation. Examples of transmission companies include American Electric Power, Xcel Energy and National Grid. Examples of distribution companies include Pacific Gas and Electric, CenterPoint Energy and PPL Corporation. Examples of energy retailers include Direct Energy, Just Energy and Constellation.
