Hexabromocyclododecane (HBCD) is a flame retardant used in a variety of applications, including building insulation, textiles, and electrical and electronic equipment. It is a brominated cyclic compound, which means it contains bromine atoms in a cyclic structure. HBCD is a persistent, bioaccumulative, and toxic (PBT) substance, meaning it can remain in the environment for long periods of time and accumulate in the bodies of living organisms. As a result, it has been identified as a substance of very high concern by the European Chemicals Agency.
In response to the potential risks posed by HBCD, the European Union has implemented a ban on its use in certain applications, such as building insulation. In addition, the Stockholm Convention on Persistent Organic Pollutants has listed HBCD as a chemical of global concern.
