High Speed Steel (HSS) is a subset of tool steels, alloyed with tungsten, molybdenum, cobalt and vanadium, and is known for its ability to retain its hardness at elevated temperatures. It is used in the manufacture of cutting tools such as drill bits, taps and reamers, as well as in the production of cold-work tooling. HSS is also used in the production of dies and punches, and in the manufacture of machine tools.
HSS is a relatively expensive material compared to other types of iron and steel, but its superior properties make it a popular choice for many applications. Its high wear resistance and toughness make it ideal for cutting tools, while its high heat resistance makes it suitable for use in hot-working applications.
Some of the major companies in the HSS market include Sandvik, Kennametal, Sumitomo Electric, Mitsubishi Materials, and Uddeholm. Show Less Read more
