Mitotane, also known as o,p'-DDD, is an anti-cancer drug used in the treatment of adrenocortical carcinoma (ACC). It is a prodrug, meaning it is converted to its active form, o,p'-DDT, in the body. Mitotane works by inhibiting the synthesis of cortisol, a hormone produced by the adrenal glands. It is also used to treat Cushing's syndrome, a condition caused by excessive production of cortisol. Mitotane is usually administered orally, but can also be given intravenously. Mitotane is a relatively rare drug, and is not widely used in oncology. It is not approved by the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) for use in the treatment of ACC, but is approved in some other countries. The drug is also used off-label in some cases, such as for the treatment of metastatic breast cancer. The market for Mitotane is small, but it is growing as more countries approve its use. Companies that produce Mitotane include Novartis, Pfizer, and Sanofi. Other companies that produce generic versions of the drug include Mylan, Teva, and Sun Pharmaceuticals. Show Less Read more
