Oil sands, also known as tar sands, are a type of unconventional petroleum deposit found in sedimentary rocks. They are composed of a mixture of sand, clay, water, and bitumen, a heavy, viscous form of petroleum. Oil sands are found in many countries, but the largest deposits are located in Canada and Venezuela.
Oil sands are mined and processed to extract the bitumen, which is then refined into synthetic crude oil. This process is more expensive and energy-intensive than conventional oil production, but it has become increasingly important as global demand for oil has grown.
Oil sands are also used to produce a variety of other products, including asphalt, lubricants, and petrochemicals. The oil sands industry is a major contributor to the Canadian economy, providing jobs and revenue for the country.
Companies in the oil sands market include Suncor Energy, Imperial Oil, Cenovus Energy, and Husky Energy. Show Less Read more
