Tafamidis is a drug used to treat transthyretin amyloid cardiomyopathy (ATTR-CM), a rare, progressive, and fatal genetic disorder of the heart. It is a member of the Central Nervous System Drugs class, which includes drugs used to treat neurological disorders. Tafamidis works by stabilizing the transthyretin protein, which helps to reduce the buildup of amyloid deposits in the heart. It is available in two forms: tafamidis meglumine and tafamidis free acid.
Tafamidis is marketed by Pfizer, Inc. and Vyera Pharmaceuticals, LLC. Pfizer markets tafamidis meglumine under the brand name Vyndaqel, while Vyera markets tafamidis free acid under the brand name Vyndamax. Both drugs are approved by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) for the treatment of ATTR-CM.
