Technetium-99m (Tc-99m) is a radioactive isotope of technetium used in nuclear medicine and radiopharmacology. It is the most widely used medical radioisotope in the world, with an estimated 30 million diagnostic procedures performed annually. Tc-99m is produced in nuclear reactors and is used in a variety of medical imaging procedures, such as single photon emission computed tomography (SPECT) and positron emission tomography (PET). It is also used in the diagnosis and treatment of cancer, as well as in the detection of certain heart and brain diseases. Tc-99m is supplied to hospitals and clinics by a number of companies, including Lantheus Medical Imaging, GE Healthcare, Mallinckrodt Pharmaceuticals, and Bracco Diagnostics. Other companies involved in the production and distribution of Tc-99m include Nordion, Covidien, and IBA Molecular. Show Less Read more
