Established players respond to new competition
Larger carbonate players responded in different ways to this new low-priced competition. Carbonate players launched larger pack sizes in order to offer more volume for the same price and introduced new flavours and new pack sizes and styles, such as Coca-Cola’s Fanta in the new “Bamboocha” bottle, launched in early 2006.

In 2005, FEMSA, the largest Coca-Cola bottler in Mexico launched a low-price carbonate. The cost of a litre of the new Mundet Multisabores equals that of Big Cola but the former is sold in a smaller and easier to handle two-litre bottle. Mundet was previously only available in apple flavour but new flavours include Tutti-Frutti, Tamarind, Lemon, Pineapple and Mandarin. The entry of low-price carbonates also had an impact on concentrates, which declined in the last two years of the review period in off-trade volume terms as falling prices made it easier for more consumers to drink ready-to-drink beverages like carbonates.
