Anticholinergic drugs are a class of medications that act on the neurotransmitter acetylcholine in the central nervous system. They are used to treat a variety of conditions, including Parkinson's disease, overactive bladder, and gastrointestinal disorders. Anticholinergics work by blocking the action of acetylcholine, which is responsible for transmitting signals between nerve cells. This can help reduce muscle spasms, improve bladder control, and reduce gastrointestinal symptoms. Anticholinergics are available in both prescription and over-the-counter forms. Commonly prescribed anticholinergics include trihexyphenidyl, benztropine, and oxybutynin. Over-the-counter anticholinergics include diphenhydramine and hyoscyamine. Several pharmaceutical companies produce anticholinergic drugs, including Pfizer, GlaxoSmithKline, Merck, and Novartis.
