Drospirenone is a synthetic progestin used in women's health for contraception and hormone replacement therapy. It is a fourth-generation progestin, which is known to have fewer androgenic side effects than earlier generations. It is used in combination with estrogen in oral contraceptive pills, and is also used in hormone replacement therapy to treat menopausal symptoms. Drospirenone is also used to treat premenstrual dysphoric disorder, a condition characterized by severe mood swings and physical symptoms before menstruation.
Drospirenone is available in many forms, including oral tablets, transdermal patches, and vaginal rings. It is also available in combination with other hormones, such as estradiol and ethinyl estradiol.
Several pharmaceutical companies manufacture and market drospirenone-containing products, including Bayer, Merck, Pfizer, and Teva Pharmaceuticals. Show Less Read more
