Fingolimod is an immunosuppressive drug used to treat multiple sclerosis (MS). It is a sphingosine 1-phosphate receptor modulator that works by preventing lymphocytes from leaving the lymph nodes, thus reducing the number of lymphocytes in the bloodstream. This reduces the inflammation and damage to the central nervous system caused by MS. Fingolimod is the first oral drug approved for the treatment of MS and is available in both capsule and injection form. Fingolimod is used to treat relapsing forms of MS, including relapsing-remitting MS and secondary progressive MS. It is also used to reduce the frequency of relapses and delay the progression of disability in people with MS.
